|Sustainable Home Garden Development Programme was launched in Tanjantenna, Kuragala and Kaltota areas of Balangoda Divisional Secretariat Division during August 2014, under the project on Empowerment for zero poverty, funded by Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC. The programme was assessed according to the criteria of the Department of Agriculture during the month of June 2015 by Mr. Malik Karunaratna and Mr. Lahiru Rasanjana, Agricultural Instructors of the respective areas. They visited around 52 home gardens of the area under this exercise.
A programme was organized in the Church premises of Tanjantenna on 25th June 2015, to commemorate “World’s Environment day” that was celebrated on June 5th worldwide and to award presents for the winners of the home garden competition. Very Rev. Frs. Damian Fernando, Vicar General, Tensin Perera, Chancellor & Parish Priest Belihuloya, Rev. Frs. Texie Dissanayake, Parish Priest of Balangoda, Milton Wickramasinghe, Parish Priest Dehigahapitiya, Srilal Fernando, Parish Priest Keerapathdeniya, A.M. Joy, Assistant Parish Priest Balangoda, P. Allan & Anil Peiris of Tanjantenna Church and 55 persons from the respective areas were present at the occasion.
All were welcomed and the purpose was explained by Mr. Sunil Fernando, Administrator of Caritas Ratnapura Sethmini and a talk on “Food security through sustainable home garden development” was given by Mr. Chandana Siriwardena, Assistant Director of Balangoda region of the Department of Agriculture. Very Rev. Fr. Damian Fernando and Rev. Fr. Anil Peiris made two special speeches. Rev. Fr. Anton Sriyan, the Director of Caritas Ratnapura- Sethmini, appreciated and thanked all participated and requested the support of all the members for the successful implementation of the programme. Fr. Director highlighted the teachings of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, given in his recent encyclical on the environment, “Laudato sit”- on the care of our common Home. Further, he insisted on the necessity to protect & preserve mother earth as our gift to our future generations. “Parisara Geethaya” and an attractive dance were performed by the students of Medabedda School. An art competition was also organized for various Children Associations along with the day’s Programme and winners received gifts.
